Aaron Gwin’s Hunt for a UCI Mountain Bike World Championship

When Aaron Gwin hangs up his racing shoes (many, many years from now), 2016 will still stand out as an important season among an already impressive career.
At the end of 2015, he walked away from the Specialized team with whom he’d wrapped up his third UCI World Cup overall title and caused an internet meltdown. Cyberspace had just about recomposed itself when he announced that he’d be riding a YT Industries bike made up of a smorgasbord of components on a team as yet to be finalized. For many racers, this would all have been a leap too far, but not for Gwin.
Yet even with a freshly won fourth title in the bag, he arrived at the Val di Sole UCI World Championships arguably in the shadow of one man; the UK’s Danny Hart. Gwin had never won so much as a medal at the World Championships – it had always been ‘wreckers or checkers’ for the Californian. Could he overthrow Hart’s late season dominance to make 2016 even more remarkable?

Aaron Gwin’s Hunt for a UCI Mountain Bike World Championship
this is depressing
To me it’s kinda wierd why the WC still holds such an imporatnce when it’s just one race among others.
Raumance its in the title?
Downhill is all about having the fastest time down a hill. The way the world cup is set up, a rider can win without ever having won an actual race. The points system can lead riders to take it a bit easy and not take huge risks in the hope of consistantly finishing. With the world champs on the other hand, theres only one race to win it in, so riders are encouraged to put everything on the line. This fact combined with the fact that the course is so gnarly and its the last race of the season makes for, what i believe to be, the best, fastest, gnarliest and truest to its name race on the downhill calender
Ok well know that I think about it’s the last race of the season which means you don’t need to worry about an injury ending the season so riders are more free to take risks. Whereas in all the other races the riders have to weigh the risk with the season standings and scores. So yeah in that sense there is a bit more to it than the other races.
Poor guy but i m sure he will break the curse eventually 🙁
