Lots has changed in 20 years in Mountain Biking but just how much?
This is the bike that Jason McRoy rode at Mammoth Mountain in 1995 for the Kamikaze Eliminator race- a Specialized S-Works FSR. Compared to a 2015 Specialized S-Works Demo.

since when 95′ became retro???
not much will change in 20 years. if you compare todays bike with a bike
from 15 years ago the difference is much smaller than comparing a 2000 bike
to a 1995 bike. it was the late 90’s, early 2000’s that the downhill bikes
got much better and more suited to downhill.
how is nobody noticing that the derailleur is about to ‘explode’, even
though the chain is only on the second or third rear sprocket?
that bicycle doesn’t work in that state, the chain is too short.
I can imagine the 95 bike didnt cost anything like the new sworks
And I guess the beefy demo is actually lighter
The old bike would be better as a trail/cross country bike.
what was the exact weight of the new demo s-works?
Maybe in 20 years, either internal gear hubs or BB start taking over if
they can get the prices a slight bit down to more broadly acceptable levels
like suspension has. I’d love to get SRAM triggers compatible on a Rohloff
if I were to go back to multi-speed, I’m quite content with singlespeed
life. That said, I still think we’ll be still be lacing spokes to bike
wheels for another hundred years and more.
The downhill guys have finally switched over to carbon frames now? Feels
like yesterday that they said it was too unreliable.
hats off to the old downhillers.. big balls
I would have liked to watch rides back to back
I’m surprised a internal geared transmission or hasn’t caught on. Seem
pretty silly to still have exposed rear mech on a DH bike. Better rear
wheel dishing and less risk for broken stuff. It’s been done with Honda
RN-01 G-Cross and DIY Millyard bike with some success.
going downhill on a cantilever brake give me goosebump! Can’t imagine how
old timer can have fun 20 years back when they can’t even brake properly
Seeing that old steel tank brought back memories of when i started mtbing
on a full rigid titanium!!!
I will say that I kind of miss the days where it was just the one bike that
did all kinds of riding. You needn’t have a bike for each discipline. Thats
kinda why I got a hardtail 29er. I grew up with the old school way of
thinking and while it does limit what I can do, I like not having to afford
a bunch of bikes and not have to think about which bike I need, I simply
grab my bike and try whatever there is. Simpler times.
Two finger braking – yeah that’s a habit I’ve never broken. Spent my teen
years on a Shogun Trail Breaker, Cro Moly frame, 7 Speed Shimano drivetrain
with BioPace chainrings, and cantilever brakes. As the Don said, stopping
had to be planned in advance in wet, muddy conditions.
Retro vs modern… I was hoping you would ride the two bikes like GCN did
on their video 😛 Anyway, cool video! Keep it up :-D
It surprises me that everything on the new DH bike has evolved except the
drive train. Why is what I want to know. And that lame excuse “it works”
doesn’t make sense.
Still running a Horst 4-bar. Yeah, it’s that good.
Loved that, I’d like love to see an vintage vs current riding comparison…
I haven’t seen the Guide RS “DH” brakes that were on that Demo
before…what’s the diff between regular RS and RS DH?
Aaaargh can’t believe you didn’t ride them both and share your impressions.
What a wasted opportunity.
Why don’t you do a timed comparison on a downhill course?
Please do a video of Marc testing it out on the trail! It would be amazing
Hey Gmbn I am really interested in converting to a 1 x 10 [sram] but am
currently at a 2×10 internal cables so it’s a bit of a faf, would love some
feedback and what would be good to fit, maybe a how to or some tips and
tricks?
