A multi-tool should have all the tools you’ll need, and nothing you don’t. A chain tool is essential for any ride you can’t walk home from.

I once needed a screwdriver cos my seat broke and I found one on my ride
lucky me????
I was 2km into a mountain biking trail and my chain snapped, I had to walk
the 8 km with my bike to get some help cause I didn’t bring any tools
On my commute one morning, I came upon a fellow cyclist stranded along the
path. Her rear derailleur was toast, part of her chain was mangles, and she
couldn’t get where she needed to go – several miles on. I used the chain
tool on my multitool to shorten the chain taking out the bad links and
bypassing the derailleur to make it effectively a single speed to get her
to work and the bike shop next door. For the next few years after that I
often saw her along the trail and we always exchanged a warm hello as we
passed.
20 years of road cycling I have never broken a chain yet
Chain tool is essential! I rode the American Birkebeiner on my fat bike
last march. about 3k in (of 47) I broke my chain on an ascent. I pulled off
and tried to fix it trailside and ended up breaking the pin off my chain
tool. Walking to the first aid station, through the wilderness, in snow,
when it’s just above freezing only to be picked up by the sweeper vehicle
is not fun, not to mention the shame I felt while getting passed by almost
500 riders. Good tools are great but you also need experience using them in
the worst conditions you foresee yourself riding in or you might as well
not have them at all.
i was biking and i snapped my frame
Ive had an icetoolz small multitool with only allens for about 2-3 years
and its a great tool- chromoly steel- light and durable
Couldn’t take my eyes off that Canyon in the back haha
Does Si carry a spare hanger?
I carry a Toepeak ratchet rocket, which was £19 in Halfords, lightweight
with its own pouch and much easier to use than a multi tool, just replace
the heads in the ratchet, brilliant tool!
I had my chain snap at the top of Les Deux Alpes on a solo ride. Never even
thought of carrying a chain tool before then. After being mended by three
nice French cyclists and making it to the top, I promptly visited the bike
shop in Bourg D’oissans and bought one. I won’t make that mistake again!
i always carry a couple of zip-ties,as well..
I always tow a Snap-on tool bench. Does become a bit of a burden on the
mountain climbs but when something goes wrong, who’s laughing now eh!
Quicklink in a saddle bag is a great idea. Although a chain snap has never
happened to me and I already have the topeak multitool that has a chain
tool on it so I don’t think that I’m going to do it.
I really like Specialized´s bottle cage with built in multi tool and a top
cap that hides the chain tool. Neat :)
how the heck did you rip your derailleuer off…? on a road bike…? must
be a good story…
I also carry a sheader presta converter. Its tiny and in the worse case you
run out of Co2 cartridges its been a life saver at a petrol station.
My favorite multitool is my cell phone with a few good friends on speed
dial.
