Which Cycling Team Rides The Lightest Bikes? | Abu Dhabi Tour 2015
Who has the lightest bike, who has the heaviest bike, and, what is the average bike weight in the pro peloton? We set out to find out at stage 1 of the Abu Dhabi Tour.
Click here to subscribe to GCN: http://gcn.eu/SubscribeToGCNBike weight is a contentious subject in road racing. With a minimum weight limit of 6.8kg per bike, teams and mechanics are often forced to weigh their bikes down rather than use the lightest components available.
We did a quick poll at the Abu Dhabi Tour to find out the range of bike weights in the pro peloton, the team with the lightest bikes, the team with the heaviest bikes and, the average weight of a pro bike…
Of course, all of these are rough figures, but we’ve seen teams using these scales before UCI bike checks, so we’d stand by both the range and the averages.
As always, let us know your thoughts in the comments, and, if you know the weight of your bike, tell us that too!

I BUILT A BIKE 22KG. SATELLITE RADIO, 6 WATER BOTTLE CAGES, HAMMOCK,
FISHING GEAR, AND ENOUGH HEADLIGHTS TO BLIND AN AUTOMOBILE. I RODE IT 5
YEARS AND PUT OVER 8000KM ON IT. I CALLED IT “THE PIGG” IN KENTUCKY, WHEN
YOU SEE AN ADULT ON A BICYCLE THAT USUALLY MEANS 3RD D.U.I. (DRIVING UNDER
INFLUENCE OF ALCOHOL)
6,5 kg would be better!
He looks constipated
2004 Merlin Ti – 7.711Kg – and a beautiful ride! right in there with the
ave. weight! (too bad pro’s went away from Ti bikes, more money to be made
in carbon by Mfg I guess)
Eastway CX2.0 with XL frame – 10 kg. My MTB-bikes much heavy.
vitus 979 with dura ace 7400 8 speed – 9.1kg
Good job those bikes aren’t much heavier, or I thick he might struggle to
get them off the ground (good power lifting faces in there)
12.55 KG
6,945 kg
11.5 kilos
My mountain bike is around 13 kilograms with suspension and all.
I’m sure someone has already said this, but you only weighed the Giant
team’s propel. I’d be interested in the weight of their new TCRs. It’s also
worth noting that the propel is probably the oldest frame series in this
test
my canyon is 12.2 pounds.
