How To Breathe While Cycling? Tip Of The Day Rain Commute BikeBlogger

How to breathe while cycling? Well, you want to get as much fresh air in and as much stale air out.

Breathe from your stomach. What does that mean? Expand your abdomen first as you inhale, and then your rib cage. When you exhale, contract your abs to blow out the air. It takes practice and concentration. Essentially you are going for long deep breaths not short shallow breaths.

Another tip is to breathe with a rhythm. Try to focus on your pedal stroke and your breathing. For some this equates to 2 pedal strokes time for inhaling and 3 pedal strokes time for exhaling. This obviously depends on whaterver your nomral riding cadence is, and for some the ratio is 3 to 3, or 2 to 3, etc. Your got to find your rhythm and stick with it.

If you feel you are breathing too fast then slow down your cadence (shift up to a harder gear). If you feel you are breathing too slow and your muscles are getting tired then speed up your cadence (shift down to an easier gear).

Learning to sync your mental thoughts and physical conditions is a skill that takes time to master and is different for everybody, so keep trying, and keep improving.

So in a nutshell, deep controlled breathing is key. Focusing on that will help prevent cramps too.

Why do I go ‘wooo!’ sometimes? Dump that stale air and stay fresh!

12:45 I said ‘long deep shallow breaths’ I meant to say long deep controlled breaths. Sleepy BikeBlogger.
